Spinning for Purpose & consistency

Tutor: Christina Chisholm

Thursday 21 & Friday 22 November 2024

This course is suitable for experienced spinners who wish to learn to spin the most suitable yarn for their intended project; knitting, crochet, weaving etc, using appropriate fibre preparation and spinning techniques.

Combining spinning, dyeing and weaving skills in a single project is a particular pleasure; each can be used to create truly unique cloth. This course will look at different methods of preparation and spinning; how to select the most suitable methods for fibre type and end use and how to spin a consistent, measurable and repeatable yarn.

These methods will be put into practice by considering a number of possible projects, drawing on the participant’s choices and some of the tutor’s completed projects; in each instance choosing the correct preparation and spinning methods for the task. Effective sampling methods will be explained and students will spin small samples of yarn for their chosen projects.

Participants will bring their own spinning wheel and associated equipment (carders, combs, niddy noddy, lazy kate if they have these). Different types of fibre will be available from the Workshop, however participants are encouraged to plan their own project and source suitable fibre to bring.
