Birling Eddies

Inspired by the swirling movement of water and the Scots word birling—to spin, twirl or whirl—this three-day workshop invites you to explore how subtle changes in weave drafts can transform a familiar structure into cloth full of rhythm, movement and visual energy.

Beginning with the classic 4-shaft dogtooth/houndstooth weave structure, you’ll discover how cloth can evolve beyond its traditional form. By moving away from the conventional straight draft and playfully reordering the threading and lifting sequences, you’ll create patterns that appear to flow, spiral and shift across the fabric, giving your weaving a wonderful sense of movement.

Throughout the workshop you’ll be encouraged to experiment, observe and develop your own woven variations, gaining a deeper understanding of how small changes to a draft can dramatically influence the finished cloth.

A practical demonstration will guide you through preparing a 2-metre merino lambswool warp, with plenty of professional tips on winding the warp, transferring it to the loom, stretching it correctly, winding onto the back beam and dressing the loom before you begin weaving your own unique cloth.

You’ll receive workshop notes in advance, including a selection of threading and lifting sequences to explore during the workshop. These will be expanded upon during the workshop, giving you the confidence to experiment and develop your own interpretations.

By the end of the three days you’ll leave with a collection of woven samples, a greater understanding of weave design, and the confidence to manipulate traditional structures into fabrics that are dynamic, expressive and uniquely your own.

The Scottish word birling means to spin or whirl with a rapid revolving motion. It can describe swirling water, lively movement or even balancing on a spinning floating log. It comes from the Scots verb birl, to spin or twirl with a rapid revolving motion – for example “ma heid’s fair birlin” meaning my head is spinning” It seemed the perfect name for a workshop that celebrates the joyful transformation of traditional weave structures into cloth full of movement and life.

Based in Edinburgh James  trained at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design in Dundee before establishing PickOne in 1997. For a number of years since he has released regular collections, developed a teaching practice in weave — running weekend weave workshops as well as evening classes — and established PickOne Productions; an events company specialising in curated exhibitions featuring the best of contemporary Scottish design.
