Demystifying Weave Structures

Three-Day Workshop

Whether you’re completely new to weaving or already have some experience on an 8-shaft table loom, this three-day workshop is designed to build your confidence and deepen your understanding of weave structures.

Many weavers find the terminology, drafts and technical language used in weaving books overwhelming at first. This workshop was created to remove those barriers, helping you understand the language of weaving in a practical, approachable and enjoyable way. By breaking down the jargon and exploring weave structures together, you’ll gain the confidence to read drafts, understand how they work and apply them to your own weaving.

Ahead of the workshop you’ll receive a curated list of weave structures, together with recommended book references, allowing you to choose a structure that sparks your interest and provides the focus for your three days at the loom.

You’ll also enjoy a step-by-step demonstration of preparing a 2-metre merino lambswool warp, with plenty of practical tips and professional shortcuts along the way. From winding the warp and transferring it to the loom, to stretching, winding onto the back beam and dressing the loom, each stage will be clearly explained before you begin weaving your chosen structure.

By the end of the workshop you’ll leave not only with a woven sample, but with a clearer understanding of weave structures, greater confidence in interpreting weaving drafts, and the skills to continue exploring the rich possibilities of woven design.

About James Donald

Based in Edinburgh James  trained at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design in Dundee before establishing PickOne in 1997. For a number of years since he has released regular collections, developed a teaching practice in weave — running weekend weave workshops as well as evening classes — and established PickOne Productions; an events company specialising in curated exhibitions featuring the best of contemporary Scottish design.

Cancellation: refundable up to 3 months prior to the commencement, minus the £50 non-refundable deposit.
